Going to a court or tribunal

What to expect when you are involved in a judicial case.

  1. Check which court or tribunal is dealing with the case. Jurisdiction depends on the law and the type of decision or dispute.
  2. Read the notice, order or directions you have been given. These tell you what the court or tribunal requires in that particular case.
  3. Use the administrative route for filing and case enquiries. LL Courts & Tribunals Service manages case administration and hearing arrangements.
  4. Raise legal or procedural matters in the proper judicial way. Court staff can explain administrative processes but cannot give legal advice or decide the merits of your case.
  5. Tell the court about accessibility or communication needs early. Appropriate arrangements should be considered without changing the independence of the proceedings.
