Understanding judgments

A judgment or tribunal decision records the judicial determination and, where given, the reasons for it.

What you may see

A published decision may identify the court or tribunal, parties, date, judges or tribunal members, a neutral citation, the issues, reasoning, orders and outcome. Publication can be restricted or anonymised where law or a judicial order requires it.

Neutral citations

A neutral citation is a court-issued identifier for a judgment or decision. It is separate from an internal case number and allows the decision to be cited independently of a commercial law report.

Publication

Not every hearing produces a written publishable judgment. The judicial decisions service contains only decisions approved for public publication; it does not reconstruct decisions from summaries or administrative records.
